When I found this book in my local library, I read it over and over trying to make sense of what it meant. Simple put, it is a story about a boy who is grey, in spirit and colour. Emotionally blunted from the time he was a baby, he is unable to feel either joy or sorrow… until one fateful day when the near death of his pet opens a lid on his emotions and they come flooding out. It speaks to the importance of feeling, and draws our attention to the power of simply allowing oneself to cry and laugh. Hidden beneath this is a deeper message about the impact of early familial conflict or abuse on a child’s emotional development and wellbeing. It is a story of survival, hope, and humanity. Suitable for children aged 5 and up.
