The concept of the earth as a shared home can be difficult for young children to grasp, but Our Big Home does a wonderful job of introducing kids to the idea that people, plants and animals are all deeply connected and must live in harmony with one another. The story touches on the Buddhist concept of dependent origination (pratītyasamutpāda), and gently fosters an early sense of environmental stewardship, compassion, and gratitude for the natural world. This book drew me in with its vibrant freeform illustrations and rhythmic prose, making it feel almost like a lullaby to read. It’s a bright and hopeful book that stands out in a time when climate anxiety is at the forefront of many people’s minds. Suitable for children aged 4 and up.
